Wild weather predicted for north coast

Posted September 5, 2008 08:45:00

Communities along the New South Wales mid-north coast are being warned of the possibility of high winds and flooding today.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood warning for the Bellinger Valley, and says localised flash flooding is possible in other locations along the mid-north coast.

The Bureau has also issued a flood watch for the region, and says about 70 per cent of flood watches across NSW are followed by flooding.

Gale warnings are in place for the Hunter Valley and mid-north coasts from Norah Head extending up to Wooli, and strong wind warnings for the Hunter and Sydney coasts from Sydney to Norah Head, and for the far-north coast from Wooli to Point Danger.

The winds are expected to average more than 60 kilometres per hour, with gusts in excess of 90 kilometres an hour possible.

The wild weather and heavy rain are associated with a low pressure system forming off the NSW north coast, which will move south towards Port Macquarie by the evening.
