A court in New Zealand has heard details about the death of the mother of the little girl who was abandoned at a Melbourne train station earlier this year.

Michael Xue has been ordered to stand trial for the murder of his wife, Anan Lui.

Xue had a Chinese translator in court, but when he was asked how he would like to plead he answered carefully but emphatically in English, "I am not guilty, I am innocent".

Anan Liu's body was found in the boot of the family's car a year ago.

Pathologist Timothy Koelmeyer carried out the autopsy and says Ms Lui's body was naked except for white gloves, and a neck tie was wrapped around her throat.

"The neck tie was striped. At the time of the examination it was quite loose and there was head hair trapped," he said.

He told the court there were no injuries suggesting a struggle.

Xue will reappear in court next month where a date for his trial will be set.
