Graduate guards fill Bunbury jail vacancies

Posted September 4, 2008 14:19:00

The Minister for Corrective Services, Margaret Quirk, says staff vacancies at the Bunbury Regional Prison have now been filled.

Eleven graduate guards have been appointed in the lead up to the opening of a new 72-bed unit at the prison.

A recent inspection of the prison found that some violence rehabilitation programs were not being run due to staff shortages.

However, Ms Quirk could not confirm whether the programs will now be delivered, saying a review is still underway.

"These people are fully operational prison officers and they will mean that those officers in Bunbury Regional Prison, who are currently maybe doing a little too much overtime, will be able to pull back on that overtime and that's a good thing for everyone," she said.
