The weather bureau says heavy rain is expected across south-east Queensland over the next 24 hours.

It is expected to cause local flooding on the Gold and Sunshine coasts, with the hinterland areas to be most impacted.

Senior forecaster Gavin Holcombe says the heaviest falls will be overnight and early tomorrow morning.

"Falls [will probably be] anywhere around the south-east, anywhere between 30 to 50 millimetres, but on the hinterland of the Gold and Sunshine coasts we probably expect falls probably in excess of 100mm through there over the next 24 hours," he said.

The Department of Emergency Services is urging motorists to slow down and drive responsibly in the wet weather.
