Rio Tinto has shut down operations at part of its Cape Lambert iron ore port after a machinery break down.

The company's rail car dumper, which tips iron ore from the train into a storage receival, has been damaged.

Rio says the incident is beyond its control and it has had to tell its customers there may be a delay in delivering their iron ore.
