Hawthorn's Lance Franklin has become the first AFL player since Tony Lockett in 1998 to kick 100 goals in a regular season.

Franklin went into Saturday night's round 22 match against Carlton needing two majors to reach the magical milestone and did so with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

In league tradition, around 5,000 members of the crowd at Docklands rushed onto the ground to celebrate with Franklin, who was quickly surrounded by team-mates and security guards.

He was then ushered into the dressing rooms until the crowd dispersed.

"It was obviously good to get it out of the way in the first quarter," Franklin told Channel 10 upon emerging back on to the ground.

"It's exciting to get back out there amongst the boys, it'll be a good night."

Blues forward Brendan Fevola went into the game with 92 goals for the season and was considered an outside chance to also reach the 100-goal milestone.

He had failed to register a goal by the time Franklin had booted his two.

In a match with no bearing on finals positions, the Hawks led 6.4 (40) to 2.3 (15) at the first change.
