Elderly man arrested in Hong Kong over double stabbing

Posted August 30, 2008 17:02:00

An elderly man has been arrested in Hong Kong after fleeing Australia following the double stabbing of an aged couple in Sydney, police have said.

New South Wales Police said that the 74-year-old was picked up as he arrived in Hong Kong airport late Thursday.

They allege the man paid an early morning visit to the home of a woman, 71, and her 80-year-old wheelchair-bound partner in Beverly Hills in Sydney's south-west early on Thursday.

"Police will allege the woman was greeted by a 74-year-old man who entered the home and placed items in the kitchen," police said in a statement.

"It is alleged that the man then assaulted the woman with a weapon before proceeding to the bathroom and assaulting the wheelchair-bound man."

The couple both suffered multiple stab wounds to the back, head and chest in the attack and remain in a serious condition in hospital, police said.

Police said the 74-year-old was in Hong Kong police custody and was expected to appear in a court in the southern Chinese city in relation to his extradition back to Sydney.
