Probe begins into fatal police pursuit

Posted August 30, 2008 13:12:00

An investigation has been launched into a police pursuit in Adelaide's north that ended with the deaths of two drivers.

Police began chasing a utility after it was spotted doing burnouts on Main North Road, at Pooraka about 2:00am (ACST).

They briefly lost sight of the vehicle and then discovered it had collided head-on with a car on nearby Bridge Road.

Both drivers, a 30-year-old Pooraka man and a 23-year-old Welland man, were killed, while three passengers were taken to hospital - one of them in a critical condition.

Assistant Police Commissioner Graeme Barton says it was particularly stressful for one of the officers involved in the pursuit.

"One of the police officers knew one of the deceased, didn't know him at the time but once he'd gone to give some assistance he recognised that he knew him, he went to school with him some time ago," he said.
