Snap strike to impact electricity bill payments

Posted August 30, 2008 13:11:00

A snap strike by power workers across New South Wales this weekend means people will be unable to pay their electricity bills.

The strike was announced yesterday in response to Premier Morris Iemma's announcement that he would partially privatise the electricity sector.

About 1,500 administration workers in billing, inquiries and call centre workers with Energy Australia, Intergral Energy and Country Energy are taking part in the action.

The United Services' Union's general secretary Ben Kruse says if privatisation goes ahead, the public will pay.

"If these services are privatised the next time you get your bill it will be from a private operator and people can be assured that the prices contained in those bills will go up," he said.

He says the Government appears to be targeting the retail sector because it is perceived to have less industrial muscle than other power divisions.
