A-G welcomes ruling against convicted murderer

The South Australian Attorney-General has welcomed a Supreme Court decision dismissing an argument that a convicted murderer should be allowed automatic parole.
Shane Andrews was jailed for a shooting outside the Aberfoyle Primary school in 1991, and became eligible for parole last year.
He took the State Government to court on the basis that he was sentenced before 1994, under laws which meant he did not have to apply to the parole board for release.
Last month the State Government amended the law to close the loophole and yesterday the Supreme Court backed the Government.
Attorney-General Michael Atkinson says the decision will keep Andrews behind bars.
"The parole board has ruled three times that Andrews is not fit to be let out, chiefly because he expressed no sorrow for what he did and has little insight into the effect of the murder he committed," he said.
"The Rann Government believes it's essential that Andrews earn the right to parole by fronting the parole board, and showing the parole board that he's no longer a danger to public safety."
