Hindus, Christians clash in eastern India

Indian authorities say they have stopped the fighting between Christians and Hindus in the country's far east.

At least 10 people have died in the violence.

Rioting started in the eastern state of Orissa when a Hindu holy man was killed.

Police blamed Maoist rebels but some Hindu groups accused Christians.

Deadly riots broke out, and houses and prayer halls were burnt to the ground.

About 5,000 people fled their homes and are staying in temporary camps, too scared to return.

A government spokesman says people are still arriving at the camps but the rioting has stopped.

The Vatican and the Italian government have voiced serious concern about the violence. Yesterday Catholic schools were closed across India.
