Zenit upset United to lift Super Cup

Posted August 30, 2008 07:37:00

Zenit St Petersburg became the first Russian team to win the UEFA European Super Cup overnight with a 2-1 win over Champions League winners Manchester United in Monaco.

Zenit, the UEFA Cup holders, outplayed the European champions at the Stade Louis II and held on for a deserved win despite Nemanja Vidic pulling one back for United 17 minutes from time.

Goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak and record signing Danny, who scored on his debut, put the Russians in control and was enough to win the match.

United's miserable evening was compounded when Paul Scholes was red-carded for handball in the dying stages.

Pogrebnyak, who missed the UEFA Cup final through suspension, headed Zenit in front after 44 minutes.

Danny, who joined this week in a deal with 30 million euros ($51.24 million) from Dynamo Moscow, doubled the lead after a superb solo run.
