Carbon emitters air concerns over trading scheme

Posted August 29, 2008 19:14:00

Some of Australia's largest greenhouse gas emitters have aired their views on the proposed emissions trading scheme in meetings with Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson today.

Miners and energy generators are concerned the move to put a price on carbon will have a dramatic effect on their businesses.

The coal mining sector put its case to have emissions that come directly from mining excluded from an emissions trading scheme, because there is no proper measure.

Electricity generators told Martin Ferguson they are accepting of change, but are concerned about how quickly they can get there.

A spokesman for the Minister described the meeting in Canberra as constructive and said the points raised would be considered in coming weeks.
