ACT Govt promises $1m gifted student fund

Posted August 29, 2008 15:14:00

The Stanhope Government has pledged to commit $1 million to the ACT's gifted students if re-elected.

The promise is in response to an analysis by the Australian Council for Educational Research.

The study found there has been a dramatic fall in the performance of the top 10 per cent of ACT students over the past eight years.

ACT Education Minister Andrew Barr says the results indicate a need for additional resources.

"This result is reflected across Australia but what it does identify is the need for governments at all levels to provide additional resources to ensure our gifted have their educational needs met," he said.

"And we need to ensure our public education system is catering for all students across the achievement spectrum."
