No red herring: Police recover stolen tuna

Posted August 29, 2008 15:09:00

A 34-year-old Sydney man has been charged with receiving $56,000 worth of stolen tinned tuna.

He is the second man to be charged in connection with the theft of a shipping container holding 12,000 cartons of tuna, worth about $230,000, as well a truck and trailer.

The truck, trailer and empty container were recovered shortly after the theft two weeks ago, and police say they have now recovered about half of its contents.

The first man charged over the theft was arrested the day after the truck and trailer were recovered.

Police say a 32-year-old Bankstown man was refused bail, and will appear again in Bankstown Local Court on October 8.

The second accused was arrested at a storage unit in Guildford shortly before 7:00pm (AEST) last night.

The 34-year-old man from Belmore is set to face Parramatta Local Court today after police refused bail.

Detectives are still searching for another man who ran from the storage unit during the arrest last night and could not be found, despite a search by PolAir and local officers.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
