Facelift planned for historic Newcastle building

An historic Newcastle East building is set to get a new lease on life, after being subjected to years of vandal attacks.

Plans have been lodged with Newcastle council this week to restore the Coutts Sailors Home for residential use.

Two additional terrace houses will also be constructed on the site.

Earlier proposals for the Scott Street site included an eight-storey apartment building.

However, designer Barney Collins says the new plans are more appropriate.

"Under the codes that were in place at the time that's what you could actually do to get the floor space ratio that was applicable to the site, but we've managed to show our client that if they took a lesser option they can still make it a development that will work both economically and socially," he said.
