Torbay predicts power privatisation set to fail

Posted August 28, 2008 11:47:00

The Member for the Northern Tablelands says it is likely the New South Wales Government's power privatisation plan will be defeated in the Upper House today.

The Liberal Party room met last night and the ABC has been told most MPs are of the view that the Government's electricity privatisation plan fails the public interest test.

The Opposition will formally announce its plans after a joint party room meeting this morning.

Richard Torbay says defeat of the legislation would be a win for commonsense.

"I know in my electorate, when I surveyed them about this issue it was almost 90 per cent opposing the privatisation," he said.

"They're going to be happy about this and it really does raise questions about why Parliament was recalled.

"Particular issues are going to come forward now, but from my perspective, I think it's highly likely that this will be killed off today and it won't even make a vote in the Lower House of Parliament."
