Two-year-old girl perished in house fire

Posted August 28, 2008 11:42:00

Police have released the name of a toddler who died in a house fire on the New South Wales mid-north coast yesterday.

Two-year-old Taya Gibson was staying with her grandparent's at Nelson Bay when their two-storey house was engulfed in flames early yesterday morning.

Police say the grandparents were at home with their two teenage children and three grandchildren.

They were caring for the toddler and two siblings while their parents were at Sydney's Westmead Hospital with their youngest child, who is recovering from surgery.

The grandparents and four children managed to escape the burning house, but were unable to save the toddler.

The grandmother suffered burns to her hands while trying to rescue her.

Investigators are yet to establish the cause of the fire, but police are not treating it as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
