Nationals promise to scrap headworks scheme

Posted August 28, 2008 10:29:00

The Nationals say they will scrap Labor's distribution headworks scheme if they win the balance of power in the Parliament.

Under the scheme, customers more than 25 kilometres from a power substation have to contribute towards the cost of upgrading the network.

Nationals' MP Terry Redman says, in the past year, people in Denmark, Ravensthorpe and Walpole have spent nearly $1 million in fees.

Mr Redman believes the charges are unfair and says the Government should be responsible for upgrading regional infrastructure.

"The Government has said we'll have a user-pays system for paying for these headworks charges as a contribution towards the cost of upgrading these powerlines," he said.

"We don't think that's fair. These are the wealth creating parts of the state, we believe that should be funded by consolidated revenue under a community service obligation support."
