AWB hopes freight decision attracts Govt investment

Posted August 28, 2008 10:06:00

The Australian Wheat Board (AWB) hopes its decision to expand freight rail services will convince the Victorian Government to invest in the Benalla-Oaklands line.

AWB and freight train operator El Zorro have announced a five-year deal for bulk grain haulage in Victoria and New South Wales.

AWB spokesman Peter McBride says the Government now needs to commit to upgrading the Benalla-Oaklands line as part of its overall plan to standardise tracks in the north-east.

He says it is an important and busy line that the grain industry depends on.

"I think what this does show to the Government is that we are committed to put grain on rail and hopefully that strengthens our position when we're talking to the Victorian Government," he said.
