Warrnambool prepares for AFL influx

Posted August 28, 2008 09:27:00

Warrnambool is preparing for an influx of would-be AFL players from all over the world.

The Australian Football International Cup started in Melbourne yesterday.

Matches will be played in Warrnambool on Monday and Wednesday, with two finals held under lights on Wednesday night.

Kim Sweetnam from the Warrnambool council says about 650 footballers and support staff will arrive by train on Sunday.

She says the cup will be a big boost to the city's economy.

"It's huge for our city, it's fantastic for tourism operators and accommodation houses and it's just a fantastic spectacle for people in our town to be able to go along and have access to international football," she said.
