New technology aids gold hunt

Posted August 28, 2008 09:00:00

Scientists have used new technology to look for potential gold deposits across western and northern Victoria.

The technology is based on the navigation technique of bats, and has analysed a 400 kilometre long area between Stawell and Cobram.

Geoscience Victoria's Kathy Hill says the technology is already being used in the oil and gas industries.

"We can get quite exciting images from the surface down to about 40km below the earth's surface and actually for the first time directly see faults and structures in the deep sub-surface below our feet in Victoria," she said.

It is also reported Geoscience Victoria believes there is at least 200 tonnes of undiscovered gold deposits in north-west Victoria.
