Police probe suspicious fires

Posted August 27, 2008 13:21:00

Police are investigating a string of suspicious fires south of Bendigo, including another last night.

A portable building was destroyed at the rear of a church on the corner of Axe Creek Road and the Redesdale-Bendigo Road at Strathfieldsaye last night.

It comes after fires at the nearby Emu Creek Hall yesterday morning and at the Mandurang Hall earlier this month.

Senior Constable Wayne Wilson says the scene of last night's fire is under police guard.

"It appears a classroom there has been set on fire, it has been totally destroyed and the fire is now being treated as suspicious," he said.

"It seems to coincide with a number of suspicious fires that have happened in recent weeks in the vicinity."
