Health service keeps mum over asbestos mine report

Posted August 27, 2008 12:05:00

Hunter New England Health is remaining tight-lipped on a report it has prepared on the public health issues surrounding the Woodsreef asbestos mine near Barraba in northern New South Wales.

New criticism emerged earlier this month of the threat to the public of dust being blown from the tailings at the mine that was abandoned in the early 1980s.

Hunter New England Health was asked to investigate if the asbestos dust presents a threat to local residents and motorists who use nearby roads.

The health service has issued a statement saying it has made recommendations to the Department of Primary Industries task force investigating the problem, but will not say what it has found.

It says the Department of Primary Industries is the lead Government agency overseeing the mine and is unable to make further comment.
