MPs may be recalled to debate power bill

Posted August 22, 2008 11:27:00

Central western New South Wales state MPs could be recalled from their winter break to debate the electricity privatisation legislation.

The ABC understands MPs could be asked to return to Macquarie Street as early as the end of next week.

The swift action is being backed by an alliance of business groups after the auditor general's report on the sale yesterday.

The Opposition is yet to say if it will support the sale.

Country Labor chairman Steve Whan says it is another positive report after an earlier study stated the privatisation would not disadvantage rural and regional communities.

"In fact, what we will see out of this and the Government's going to retain 80 per cent of the industry, poles and wires and infrastructure, is that we should actually expect to see an expansion of [the] Country Energy work force in some rural communities, so in the longer term I see positives from this," he said.
