The parents of a missing nine year old boy are expected to formally identify a body found floating in a Melbourne creek, later this afternoon.

Two construction workers found the body at Gardners Creek, in Melbourne's east at about 8:10am (AEST).

Nine-year old Yadav Munohur was reported missing two weeks ago, after he ran out from his Hawthorn home to play at a nearby local park.

Within minutes his mother ran after him, but despite her frantic searches of the park, she was unable to find her son.

Gardners Creek was swollen because of rain on the night he disappeared.

His parents made repeated pleas to the public, as the search for their adopted Indian born son intensified.

They had only been living in Australia for a few months.

Sergeant Graham Rodgers says divers searched the area where the body was found, only last week.

"It may've been snagged, it may have been underwater for a period of time and with the recent rains it's just brought it to the surface," he said.

He says it is a very sad ending.

"Unfortunately, with him being missing for two weeks, it's an ending that was probably expected," he said.

He says the boy's parents were notified this morning, but formal identification procedures could take some time.

"It is a warning to all parents that they should know exactly where their children are, and be aware of where they are going and what they are doing," he said.

The two construction workers found the body 70 metres from the spot where thongs belonging to the boy, were recently located.

One of the workers, Darren Jones says it will bring closure to the family.

"Happy that he's found now and the parents can start living whatever life they can now," he said.

"It's awful, makes you think about your own kids," said Stuart Denson, the second construction worker.

The Victorian Premier, John Brumby, says his heart goes out to Yadav Munohur's family.

"It's just a tragedy, your heart goes out to the family, it must be terrible for the parents, and they know now what has happened to their child, but it must be absolutely heartbreaking for them," he said.
