Western Bulldogs forward Robert Murphy says the possible return of injured midfielder Scott West would give his team a boost.

The Bulldogs have lost four of their last five games. They play Essendon this Friday at Docklands.

West is unlikely to be selected for this weekend's clash, but could make a comeback in the finals.

Murphy says West's return would inspire the team.

"When you include someone like Scotty West into the side it'd give any team a boost so we'd be wrapped to have him back and it looks like we won't have to wait too much longer," he said.

West has been out of action for most of the year with a knee injury.

He played a VFL game on the weekend, but was still limping.

Bulldogs assistant coach Peter Dean says he expects West's condition to improve soon.

"Westy's missed a lot of football since about round two or three," Dean said.

"He's done all the training, he's had some setbacks. He's an old warhorse, so we expect Westy to come out and train today.

"He still has a bit of residual soreness from it so he'll soldier on and we hope that he comes up for us."
