Grazier fears impact of Macquarie Marshes purchase

Posted August 20, 2008 08:38:00

There are claims communities in the Macquarie Marshes will suffer from the purchase of land to extend the nature reserve.

Earlier this month, the state and federal governments announced the purchase of almost 2,500 hectares of the property Pillicawarrina.

A marsh grazier, Gary Hall, says while he supports the buyback of water, he is not in favour of land purchases.

"We've been under pressure from every angle and just to cut off that money, because as soon as the government gets hold of it they don't pay any rates, they don't put anything back into our community," he said.
