Woolgoolga triathlete claims Olympic bronze

Posted August 19, 2008 08:11:00

A young triathlete from the New South Wales mid-north coast has won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Emma Moffatt had strong form going into the women's triathlon, but she was a long way from a medal certainty.

The 23-year-old from Woolgoolga, north of Coffs Harbour, led the pack after the bike race.

But she was beaten in the foot race by fellow Australian Emma Snowsill, who took the gold medal.

As she ran down the final stretch someone threw her an Australian flag, which she draped over her shoulders as she crossed the finish line.
