Unwanted pets should be used for vet training: Warren Pitt

Posted August 5, 2008 16:41:00

The Local Government Minister says he believes the University of Queensland vet school should be allowed access to unwanted pets that are about to be euthanased.

Students use the animals to gain practical experience of routine surgery.

Two months ago, the Brisbane City Council banned the use of animals from its pound but the Logan Council is expected to vote in support of the practice.

Minister Warren Pitt says it is an issue that will divide the community.

"My own personal view is that these animals are going to be put down, if they can be of use to society, perhaps that's not such a bad thing," he said.
