Logan residents slugged with rates rise

Posted July 7, 2008 12:43:00

Residents of Logan City, south of Brisbane, face higher rates payments over the next 12 months, although they have fared better than most others in Queensland's south-east.

Logan City Mayor Pam Parker has handed down her first Budget, with net rates to go up by 6.9 per cent

Councillor Parker says rates rises have been kept to a minimum.

"I would call it the lowest rate increase in south-east Queensland, making Logan an affordable and desirable city," she said.

"Here in Logan we don't want to be the sixth-largest city - we want to be the best."

She says the money will be spent across a range of programs.

"[There's] 12.5 million being spent in the west on a sporting facility, roadworks, landscaping, security cameras; $158 million for water and sewerage; $117 million for roads and drainage program; $25 million for waste management," she said.

Councillor Parker was elected in the local government elections earlier this year.
