Newcastle skipper Danny Buderus could miss up to six weeks after reports he sustained a knee injury in the final State of Origin match on Wednesday.

Buderus has been ruled out of the Knights' clash against St George Illawarra tonight, after leading the Blues to a 16-10 loss to Queensland at Sydney's Olympic stadium.

An MRI scan late yesterday revealed Buderus has fractured a bone in his left knee.

The Knights have dropped out of the NRL top eight after losing their last two games.

Knights centre Adam MacDougall says a win tonight is crucial and the veteran is keen to get back on the field after missing last week's game with the flu.

"Hoping to get a big crowd there to support us it really is somewhat of a grand final for us," he said.

"We've fallen outside the top eight so this game takes a massive significance for us."
