New South Wales coach Craig Bellamy has entrusted Blues enforcer Willie Mason with the dual roles of pack leader and talisman ahead of the State of Origin series decider this evening.

The Blues will be trying to avoid a third consecutive series loss to Queensland when the sides meet at Sydney's Olympic stadium.

Mason came in for criticism following a lacklustre performance in the Blues' 30-0 loss to the Maroons in Game II at Lang Park.

But Bellamy has called upon his star forward to respond to the challenge and play a key role in tonight's match.

"When Willie's at his best he certainly lifts the team," Bellamy said.

"He's very inspiring when he gets back on to that ball and charges on to it."

Bellamy says the Blues will not be relying on veteran hooker Danny Buderus for motivation in his final Origin match tonight.

"We're aware of it but we are not overly focussing on it," he said.

"These guys have got to go out and do it for all of their team-mates, not only Danny Buderus."

Pearce ready

Meanwhile Bellamy has backed teenage half-back Mitchell Pearce to shine ahead of his Origin debut.

Pearce will partner Roosters team-mate Braith Anasta in the halves for NSW, and Bellamy says the youngster is not lacking any confidence.

"He's certainly not backward in coming forward if he needs to tell a forward to get in a certain position, and they don't get there," he said.

"He's been great, full of enthusiasm as you would imagine for a kid playing his first Origin game."
