75 years of Australian Radio
At 8 o'clock on the 23rd November 1923, people in households across Sydney huddled expectantly around a new piece of equipment, the wireless, and tuned in to hear Miss Deering, Miss Druitt, Mr Thorp, Mr Pick, Mr Saunders and the St Andrews Choir perform 'The Swan' from Saint Saens' famous work The Carnival of the Animals, and create history. Green Power - Coming of Age?
At the Kyoto Greenhouse Conference the world's developed nations agreed to cut their greenhouse emissions as part of a global effort to slow global warming - the European Union by 8 per cent, the United States by 7 per cent and Japan by 6 per cent. Australia, Iceland and Norway were the only developed nations to plead for, and win, the right to increase their greenhouse emissions - Australia by 8 per cent.

The story of penicillin - the first antibiotic used successfully to treat people with serious infectious diseases - begins with a bit of luck. Alexander Fleming, a British scientist, noticed in 1928 that mould had prevented the growth of bacteria in his lab. But the main plot of the story involves the rediscovery of penicillin 10 years later by an Australian scientist born one hundred years ago this year.
