Testosterone - The Many Gendered Hormone
Even before testosterone was discovered, scientists had an inkling the testicles contained something special. One nineteenth century elixer containing liquified animal testes was claimed to improve physical and mental prowess, relieve constipation and increase the arc of urine. The first synthetic testosterone was produced in 1935, earning its makers a Nobel Prize, and beginning our modern association with this "substance of masculinity".
