Technology Studies Log Book - Year 9
Week 1:
We learnt about solar energy and how it is useful in our climate. Most of us live on farms and if we want electricity connected it can cost thousands. Also, coal is going to run out one day, so what do we do for electricity then?
Week 2:
We connected 4.5V transistor radios to solar power (they actually worked!) and discussed how we could use solar and wind energy to grow vegetable crops out of season. In science, we'll do experiments comparing growth rates for hydroponic plants with those grown in soil.
Week 3:
We visited "Grow Best Flower and Vegetable Farm", to see how to set up the hydroponic frames and beds. We worked on our design and did research on what materials we need for solar and wind power, and how to set them up.
Week 4:
We make a list of materials we would need. We took turns in ringing up to get prices for a solar pump and panels, a wind generator, plastic to re-cover the greenhouse, timber, wiring and batteries. We worked out our budget.
Week 5:
While we waited for materials, we researched the best composition for nutrient solution and decided to grow strawberries and lettuces.
Week 6:
We re-covered the greenhouse and discussed where to install solar panels to make best use of the sun. Also, how to set up the wind generator for when there is no sun.
Week 7 - Evaluation:
The solar powered hydroponic hothouse worked fairly well. We had to adjust the position of the solar panels until we got them right. I have learnt a lot - how to design and make frames, design and do experiments and how solar and wind energy work. We worked out that it was a lot cheaper than having the electricity connected. Our parents came to the open day and we had to explain it to them. Dad reckons we might be able to use solar power for our electric fences.
