Female Engineer in Residence Sample Program

Example of program specialising in construction/materials technology

Focus Time Suggested Activities
1. Unit Introduction
Weeks 1
Discussion and video covering - what do engineers do?

Engineering as a Career, Where do they work? What qualifications do they need?

Diary "One week in my life as an engineer" describing what they do, where they work, skills they have, problems faced and overcome.
2. Unit topics: Building Bridges
i. General Issues
Weeks 2
Present to class pictures of bridges famous for their engineering eg. Sydney Harbour, San Francisco. Students respond by discussing:
  • purpose and desirable characteristics of bridges
  • factors to be considered in design and construction in general and in relation to the bridge in question eg. materials, site characteristics, strength and costs.Students prepare a summary report
ii. Choosing Materials
Weeks 3-4
In small groups, students:
  • develop list of criteria (eg. strength, cost, resistance to weathering, appearance etc.)
  • select possible materials
  • design 2 experiments to test materials (eg. comparing strength, resistance to corrosion of 3 different metals)
  • write reports describing reasons for materials selected
  • research costs and other relevant factors - indicate how these would affect material selection.
iii. Building Bridges
Weeks 5-6
Present students with a scenario of a problem site for which they have to design the best possible bridge. Students consider details as to traffic flow, weather conditions, cost, appearance etc.
