Hands on Machines |
Weeks 2-5 |
In small groups or individually, students work through Lego Technic 2 project cards on simple machines. Students submit basic description and diagram of each construction. Discuss informally types of machines constructed eg. levers, pulleys, gears. |
Theory of Machines |
Weeks 6 |
How basic machines are developed and the theory behind some simple machines eg. levers, ramps, pulleys, gears, wheels. Extension - basic physics worksheets eg. force and distance multipliers, friction. |
Problem Solving |
Weeks 7-8 |
Using Lego Technic Activity Centre book, discuss and develop with students a series of tasks to apply the theory eg. construct a paint mixer, electric paintbrush, wind-driven car, cassette winder, rally car. |
Theory of Machines |
Weeks 9 |
Discuss with students how engines are developed (steam, electricity) and the operation of the internal combustion engine. Use diagrams to explain the difference between two and four stroke engines. Extension - rotary and diesel motors, latest developments in engines. |
