Trained as a microbiologist, Maryke Steffens escaped the clutches of a future in white lab coats only to get back amongst them as a science and health reporter with ABC TV, Radio and Online.
Maryke joined the ABC in August 2002 as a science trainee where she worked across many areas, including presenting Radio National’s Health Report and Background Briefing, writing features and news for ABC Online’s Health & Wellbeing and Science Online, reporting on Triple J and presenting the latest news in science on several regional ABC stations across the country.
Then she joined ABC Science's award winning progam Catalyst as a reporter before heading off overseas.
Highlights of her career have included dragging herself out of bed at 4:30 AM to work for breakfast radio, recording the unique sounds of a liver biopsy, and interviewing a gynaecological model (and yes, that means what you think it does.)
