2008 Queensland Redistribution

2008 Mayo and Lyne By-elections

Two more Federal by-elections loom due to the departure of Howard government ministers. The resignation of former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer will create a by-election in the South Australian seat of Mayo, while the NSW North Coast seat of Lyne will also face the polls with the resignation of former Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile.

2008 Northern Territory Election

Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson has given his Labor government its best chance of securing a third term in office by calling a snap election for Saturday 9 August. With the economy continuing to boom despite rising petrol prices, this year appears to be the best time to face the electorate rather than wait until next year's dry season.

In early 2004, opinion polls indicated that the electorate was flirting with voting for new Labor Leader Mark Latham. 2001 Queensland Election

At the 1998 election, the Borbidge Coalition government had been defeated at an election where One Nation elected 11 members to parliament. Labor won only 44 seats, but Peter Beattie was able to form a minority labor government. In late 2000 and early 2001, the government was rocked by the exposure of electoral rorts by several Labor MPs. Beattie dumped the exposed MPs, promised to clean up the Electoral Act and called a snap election at which Labor was re-elected in a landslide.
