East Timor avoids political crisis

East Timor almost had another crisis to confront this past week as the President Jose Ramos-Horta contemplated a career change. He was in for the running to be the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner. In the end he decided to keep his current job.

Journalist tells of losing partner in Baghdad

In January last year a young American aid worker, Andi Parhamovich, was killed in an ambush as she was driven through one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighbourhoods. Her boyfriend, Newsweek correspondent Michael Hastings, has written a book about went wrong.

Bougainville farewells president

Papua New Guinea correspondent, Steve Marshall, has been to Bougainville twice in just a couple of weeks. His first trip was to investigate the President's plan to enrich the autonomous region by extending the mining of metals. Steve Marshall's second visit was unexpected. He returned for the President's funeral.

Devout Cook Islanders oppose Sunday flights

The Cook Islands are usually a very peaceful place. But lately on one of the islands it's become very noisy. Hundreds of locals have been protesting against the Government's decision to allow flights on a Sunday.
