Classic FM Breakfast
Recommendation R1/3/02 - Director of Radio
The Advisory Council recognises the knowledge of the music on ABC Classic FM breakfast certainly older people enjoy the program. However there is the possibility of the loss of a younger audience. The Council had some discussion on the tone of the interchange between Margaret Throsby and Clive Robertson and suggests that they focus on music and issues of the day.
Insiders - Business Breakfast
Recommendation R2/3/02 - Director of Radio and Director of News and Current Affairs
The Advisory Council recognises different media possibilities for these programs and suggests that some of the material could be further capitalised on. With regard to Business Breakfast this is an excellent program with expert analysis and interviews which could be used on other ABC outlets. While recognising that use of charts and graphics may be a problem the Council feels there could be further cross-promotion on ABC radio. Council is aware that local radio now uses a Business Breakfast package and would like to see further promotion of this good high quality program.
Council is also interested in the broader idea of a program on personal finances.
Landline
Recommendation R3/3/02 - Director of Television
Council feels that Landline may still be missing its target audience by not repeating the program on Monday. Council would like to see this examined again.
Degrassi High - Next Generation
Recommendation R4/3/02 - Director of Television
Council commends Degrassi High - Next Generation, this is a very popular program across various age groups. Council suggests that the ABC examine ways of providing a similar program which examines current issues in an Australian context.
Cross Promotion
Recommendation R5/3/02 - Director of Television and Director of Radio
The Advisory Council believes effective cross-promotion can maximise potential audiences. Given the responses to previous recommendations put forward by the Council, and as this is a matter of continuing interest to the Council it would be most interested in receiving information on the amount of cross-promotion taking place.
Feedback
Recommendation R6/3/02 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council feels Feedback is missing the mark; it seems patronising, too short and doesn't cover issues. Council also notes the unusual timeslot for such a program. Council recommends a review of the program and its target audience.
Planet - With Lucky Oceans
Recommendation R7/3/02 - Director of Radio
Council suggested that there should be a website for Planet with Lucky Oceans.
Wine Program
Recommendation R8/3/02 - Director of Television
Building on the enormous popularity of cooking programs Council recommends consideration of a program that educates and informs about Australian wine and food and their regions.
Australian - Animal Hospital
Recommendation R9/3/02 - Director of Television
Council recommends that the ABC look to producing an Australian animal show which would be more appreciated and relevant than Rolf Harris's Animal Hospital.
Radio Frequencies
Recommendation R10/3/02 - Director of Radio
Council recommends that a small "credit card" size card be produced giving radio frequencies for each state.
Andrew Olle Lecture
Recommendation R11/3/02 - Director of Radio
Council was disappointed in the selection of Lachlan Murdoch for the Andrew Olle Media Lecture. Council felt he did not have anything to add to the ABC's presence as a public broadcaster.
City Slickers
Recommendation R12/3/02 - Director of Radio
Council enjoyed City Slickers but would also like to see such a program balanced the other way, reversing the roles where people from the country visit the city.
Commendations
Playschool
Council commended the diversity of cultural on Playschool. Council recognises the challenge of maintaining vibrancy in the program as well as meeting expectations of the audience. This is a positive step, particularly the inclusion of some of the older presenters and the mix of old and new programs. The Advisory Council supports the maintaining of the current time slots. Keep up the good work.
The Space
As part of its regular review of programs and sites to watch Council looked at The Space. Council was of the view that The Space site has improved a great deal; it is easy to get to. Council felt there might be some difficulty to the name highlighting a link with arts. The site provides a strong link between television and radio. Council felt that this was great concept let down by branding. Council felt that the name of the site might not be recognisable to the general public. This is a tremendous community resource and is a good example of where better targeted promotion would provide better access to a community groups.
The Navigators
The Advisory Council commends The Navigators; this was an interesting program with an Australian flavour.
"Mystery" Friday
Council members look forward to Friday evening viewing and commend Mystery Friday, particularly Wire in the Blood and Dirty Tricks.
Big Country Revisited
Council commends Big Country revisited - this is an excellent program which provides good use of archival material and broad community interest.
Year Of The Outback
Council commends the ABC for its coverage of all things rural in this particular year. Peter Forest's segments for the year are greatly appreciated.
Media Watch
The Advisory Council commends Media Watch this is a terrific program covering and analysing a broad range of worthy material. Particular mention is made to the segment on the Farmhand Appeal, which questioned the validity of motives, which had not been previously addressed by other media outlets.
Comedy On Radio
The Advisory Council commends the initiative of comedy on radio and hopes its becomes regular and set feature across all networks.
Bali
The Advisory Council commends the ABC for its coverage of the Bali bombing. The immediacy of the coverage with 8DDD Darwin providing local coverage in the area, flexible Online coverage with the front page, on radio personal accounts from reporters on the ground including Alan Atkinson from Adelaide, as well up to date analysis on AM, PM and the extra addition of Asia Pacific was a good example of the ABC at work. Council noted that the coverage was much better than provided elsewhere in the world.
Richard Morecroft Goes Wild
The particular program Aussie Animal Rescue - Bushfire Emergency was an excellent program showing the positive spirit of people in Australia.
Interviews With Writers
Council commends Ramona Koval's interviews with writers particularly the research for and background which goes into them.
Bush Mechanics
Council recommends a repeat of Bush Mechanics over the Christmas period and very highly recommends the consideration of a new series.
Four Corners - Mental Health Program
The Advisory Council commends the recent Four Corners program on the state of mental health in Australia. This was an important and significant program which highlighted difficulties in the system in a balanced and informative way.
Treasure Hunt
Council commends Treasure Hunt this is a great series which deserves a longer timeslot.
Compass
Council has received consistent positive feedback from a wide range of people about Compass, particularly for the programs on India. Council would like to see the program on parallel universe repeated. Council recognises the standing and expertise in the program and would like to see greater promotion including a webpage.
Radio Quiz - Norman
The Advisory Council commends James O'Loghlin radio quiz Norman.
Late Night Live
Council commends Late Night Live - the program makes an important contribution to public debate in Australia.
Sending A Message
Council commends Sending a Message and would like to see this program repeated after Message Stick.
