Recommendations

Travellers Guide

R1/3/05 - Director of Radio
The “ Travellers Guide” to ABC Radio is to be commended. The ease of locating national and local ABC Radio anywhere in Australia provides the security of regular news and weather reports. Each local station is unique and reflects regional differences and culture which enriches the travel experience. These guides should be in an easy manageable format and sold to every overseas tourist and “grey nomad” who takes to the road.

Songs of Worship

R2/3/05 - Managing Director
Using the BBC’s Songs of Praise as a template, Council recommends ABCTV produce a series of programs for Sunday viewing . “Songs of Worship inAustralia, that celebrate worship in song. These programs should allow for the richness and diversity of worship, and not be restricted to big city churches and age-old hymns.

Podcasting

R3/3/05 - Director of Radio and Director of New Media
Council commends the ABC for its pace-setting adoption of podcasting. Council notes that podcasting provides reach and access to an international audience that is growing rapidly as the relevant technology is adopted.

Council recommends that the ABC should actively promote its podcasting services internationally, consistent with its Charter obligations. Podcasting could be targeted specifically at Australians living, working and travelling overseas, as well as the wider Radio Australia audiences.

The ABC might consider investigating whether the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade could promote ABC podcasting through its public diplomacy initiatives.

Online Voting

R4/3/05 - Managing Director and Director of New Media
The Advisory Council supports ABC Television’s recent promotion of online voting for repeats of Australian Story favourite programs. This style of promotion develops a sense of ownership and could enhance audience share via use of multi platform access. Council recommends the extension of this style of promotion to other programs, for example Rage.

Hack TV

R5/3/05 - Managing Director
The Advisory Council recommends that the ABC explore the possibility of migrating Triple J’s Hack- youth current affairs format to television.

Content and themes could include:

  • youth issues and concerns
  • music/art
  • vox pop

Combined with an online presence with viewer polls and blogs.

An additional feature might include “mobile moments” where viewers would contribute 3-5 minute snapshots of their lives made from mobile phone images and video cam material.

Commendations

The Advisory Council made the following commendations:

Spicks and Specks

The Council commended Spicks and Specs at its last meeting. Program notes for this meeting indicated an increasing popularity for the program which has its strength in the introduction of new segments and not being overly “produced”.

We Can Be Heroes

Council noted the good supplementary website for We Can Be Heroes. It is innovative and Council hopes it will provide an opportunity for Chris Lilley to develop some further work. Council suggested the series could be repeated to build an audience.

SCOSE

The Advisory Council commended Irene Poinkin and SCOSE and her contribution to the professionalism of the ABC; in addition to the informative and entertaining way the SCOSE report is presented.

Reality Bites

Reality Bites continues to be a collection of first class documentaries. People know they can tune into the ABC and be consistently intrigued and stimulated by Reality Bites programs.

MDA

The Advisory Council commends MDA. It is good Australian drama with realistic plots and ambiguity which make for satisfying viewing.

Four Corners

Recent Four Corners programs have been innovative and risk taking. The Council noted that there seemed to be less imports. Programs produced this year added to the ABC’s reputation for integrity and for investigative journalism, maintaining its position as a leader in its field.

Australian Story - Work Experience

The Advisory Council commends Australian Story for the initiative in voting for the best episodes and the opportunity for young people to submit program ideas. These are excellent examples of looking at different ways of engaging with the audience while at the same time providing opportunities for young people and gaining input for greater diversity of ideas and stories.

Peter Goers SA

ABC Management has taken a risk with Peter Goers on Local Radio in South Australia which has paid off handsomely.

Background Briefing
