The ABC Advisory Council

Recommendations and Commendations 15-16 November 2001

Recommendations

Landline

Recommendation R1/3/01 - Director of News and Current Affairs
As there has been so much movement in the television schedule lately the Advisory Council recommends that Landline remain in its present timeslot of 6.30pm on Saturday evening. This is also a better time for regional and rural viewers to access the program.

Australia Talks

Recommendation R2/3/01 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council supports the concept of a program such as Australia Talks as a program that engages with regional and rural issues and makes the connection between politics and the community. In the future Council would like to see the emphasis on national issues move on to regional issues such as social issues, education and health which relate to the particular region.

The Big Picture

Recommendation R3/3/01 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council is disappointed to see The Big Picture series is no longer in the schedule and recommends that the ABC provide a regular recognisable timeslot for high quality documentary programs.

Commendations

Australian Films

Australian films on Saturday evenings are welcomed. This is a good initiative.

Coverage of September 11

The Advisory Council congratulates the ABC on its excellent overall coverage of the September 11 World Trade Centre incident and its aftermath. Council appreciates the way the ABC pulled back its coverage at the right time and has not connected this issue with the issue of asylum seekers.

Coverage of Afghanistan

The Advisory Council recognise the excellent work of journalists such as Jonathan Harley, Tony Eastley, Geoff Thompson and Jill Colgan and the circumstances which overseas correspondents are having to present their reports. The quality of their work in view of sparse resources in comparison to other broadcasters is outstanding.

Long Way to the Top

The Advisory Council would like to see further programs of Long Way to the Top with more in-depth coverage.

Bad Behaviour

This is a great example of a documentary which explains the human condition. Interviewing by Jenny Brockie is a good model.

Fly TV

The Advisory Council commends the initiative of Fly TV, it is good to see the ABC doing something for young people, and looks forward to seeing it on a mainstream channel.

Changi

The Advisory Council commends the drama series Changi. Younger members of the Council thought the series gave an understanding of what was happening in the lives of young people at that time and made a good connection between generations. Council suggests that in future the ABC resources are allocated to ensure that high quality drama are resourced to ensure continuity and accuracy of historical detail.

Andrew Olle lecture

The Advisory Council commends the ABC for the Andrew Olle Lecture, however regrets that the time slot did not allow for a wider audience.

ABC Online

The Advisory Council again commends the ABC Online for the excellent service provided. The Council notes the high speed delivery and commitment of the Online team and supports ABC Online becoming the leading Australian media site.

Federal election coverage

The Advisory Council commends the ABC's Federal Election coverage.

Radio with picture

The Advisory Council is pleased to see that this series moved across other States.

Hell on high water

The Advisory Council commends this program.

Friday night line-up

The Advisory Council commends the Friday night line up with The Glasshouse followed by mystery series and particularly at present Allen Bennett.

Compass

The Advisory Council once again commends Compass and in particular the current Son of God series.

Telling Tales

This is an excellent series only marred by the showing of promotions over the credits.

SCOSE

The Advisory Council again commends the work of SCOSE in assisting to maintain high standards. Council would also like SCOSE to look at the use of titles for males and females as there appears to be inconsistency in addressing female politicians and leaders.

8DDD

The Northern Territory member of the Council commended Fred McCue on 8DDD for the only serious coverage of News and Current Affairs in the Territory.

The blue planet

The Advisory Council commends The Blue Planet as yet another example of an excellent wildlife and nature series on the ABC.

Message Stick

The Advisory Council commends Message Stick.

NewsRadio

The Advisory Council again commends NewsRadio and would encourage every effort to find another avenue for Parliamentary Broadcasts.
