Younger Audiences
Recommendation R1/2/01 - Director of Television and Director of Radio
The ABC Advisory Council welcomes the changes to the early evening timeslot with cartoon series such as Angela Anaconda and Johnny Bravo which appeal to a younger audience. Council sees the programming in the 6.00pm timeslot as a step in the right direction but notes that there is no regular drama programming which would appeal to 10 to 16 year olds or early evening programs which provide a satisfactory alternative to a younger audience which is presently being diverted to quiz programs on commercial stations.
Council commends the drama programs, Love is A Four Letter Word and Headstart and would like to see these programs be given a longer time to establish with the targeted audience. Council has concerns as to whether the timeslots for these programs are appropriate for younger audiences. The work on cross promoting these programs on local radio is recognised however given the target audience Council suggests the cross promotion of these television programs should also be on Triple J.
Studio 22 is another program which has good bands with appeal to a younger audience. Council would like to see this program put to better use in a time-slot which would attract a younger audience. This program could also be cross promoted on Triple J.
Science Programming
Recommendation R2/2/01 - Director of Television
The ABC Advisory Council is of the view that Quantum is missed. Aftershock has been disappointing and does not satisfy an audience looking for a program which contains scientific discovery or scientific information. Council recommends the development of a program about recent scientific developments which shows science for the layperson.
