Recommendations and Commendations 14-15 March 2006

Recommendations

ABC2 – Use of Set Top Box

R1/1/06 – Director of New Media and Digital Services
To assist potential users of ABC2 the Advisory Council recommends an active PR campaign explaining the benefits of digital television with plain English direction sheets distributed via website, ABC television and ABC Shops on setting up the hardware needed.

7pm News

R2/1/06 – Director of News and Current Affairs
Council recommends that the integrity and credibility of news be maintained by careful concentration on the flow of the presentation.

Commentators – Use of Experts

R3/1/06 – Director of Radio and Director of Television and Director of News and Current Affairs
The Advisory Council recommends that a conscious effort be made to seek views and expertise from a broader base. In particular, Council recommends that where suitable Australian expertise can be found, it be given preference. Where there is no suitable Australian expertise, views should be sought from a wide range of sources than at present.

Commendations

Asia Pacific Focus

The Advisory Council commends ABC Television and New Media for the inclusion of Asia Pacific Focus. The Advisory Council has encouraged the ABC to increase the coverage of Asia Pacific region news to Australian audiences. This confirms the ABC commitment to news coverage for Australian audiences in the region.

Great Artists

The Advisory Council commends Great Artists, the excellent cinematography showing art works and locations provides an interesting take on the masters of their medium. The 10.05 timeslot is a great way to cater for the arts fans (niche audience) without alienating prime time viewers.

The Chasers War on Everything

The Advisory Council commends The Chasers War on Everything.
This is a good example of being prepared to take risks. Council appreciates the program and encourages it to retain its edge.

Radio National Breakfast – Fran Kelly

The Advisory Council commends Fran Kelly showing a good balance of views and not shying away from difficult questions in her presentation.

Dr Who – Red Dwarf

The Advisory Council commends the recent showing of Dr Who programs and suggests that a repeat series of Red Dwarf would be well accepted.

ABC FM – Margaret Throsby

The Advisory Council commends Margaret Throsby for her consistently high standard of interviewing and presentation.

Charles Southwood

The Advisory Council again commends Charles Southwood for his presentation.

The Advisory Council commends the ABC for its participation in community events, its people for the presentation of key lectures and community discussions, its participation in writers festivals and ideas festivals, providing people in discussion groups dealing with community activities and its podcasting and transcribing of important lectures.
