The ABC Advisory Council

Recommendations and Commendations 7– 8 March 2005

Recommendations

Compass

R1/1/05 - Director New Media and Director Radio
(Director of Television - For Information)

The ABC Advisory Council commends Geraldine Doogue for her presentation of Compass. As spirituality and topics surrounding spirituality are of great interest, an earlier timeslot for Compass may be appropriate. Perhaps if rights issues were not a difficulty Compass could also be run on ABC2, allowing greater audience access.

Communities and their Influence in Regional Australia

R2/1/05 - Director New Media and Director Radio
(Director of Television - For Information)

The Advisory Council recommends the development of a program or segments looking at the influence of various ethnic groups on various communities for example the Japanese in Broome, the Germans in South Australia, the Chinese in the Goldfields, the Italians in the Riverina, the Greeks in Melbourne and the Dutch in Tasmania. As some of this material may have been gathered previously perhaps existing material, if suitable, could be repurposed for ABC2.

Digital Diaries (Radio Diaries)

R3/1/05 - Director New Media and Director Radio
(Director of Television - For Information)

The Advisory Council recommends the ABC investigate the possibility of presenting an Australian version of the PBS program "Digital Diaries - a 10minute diary of peoples lives recorded by flash presentations and radio.

Commendations

The Advisory Council made the following commendations:

Foyles War

The ABC Advisory Council commends Foyles War - the mix between crime and history is very effective. More high quality programs in this genre might be appealing to audiences.

Inventions from the Shed

This popular series, which reflects suburban life and exploring what engages men, fills a niche. The Advisory Council commends Inventions from the Shed and would like to see more of the same.

Little Britain

The Advisory Council commends Little Britain; screening of this edgy, anarchic and funny program is recognition of the ABC being prepared to take risks.

School's Spectacular

The Advisory Council commends the School's Spectacular. This program demonstrated the ABC's commitment to promoting the skills of young performers as well as appealing to a wide demographic.

Opal Fever

The Advisory Council commends Opal Fever. This program gave excellent insight into the unique lives of the people and of how they live. It was educative and entertaining without being voyeuristic and commercial.

Hell has Harbour Views

The Advisory Council commends Hell Has Harbour Views. Good use of Australian talent and a different way of presenting drama.

Terrors of Tasmania

The ABC commends Terrors of Tasmania for its creative photography and insight into a little understood animal. The program was particularly relevant at this time with work being done to save the species.

The Deep End

The Advisory Council commends The Deep End in the afternoon, its continuity and delightful presentation links stories of a related nature from one day to the next. Placing programs at times to suit certain audiences is a good thing, as is matching content to the right target audience at the right time spot.

Radio National Breakfast

The Advisory Council commends Stephen Crittenden for his presentation of Radio National Breakfast. His move from a specific specialist program to Breakfast has shown his multiskilled knowledge across a broad range of subjects.

Triple J Top 100

The Advisory Council commends Triple J for the Top 100 which has become an important part of Australian music culture. The interactive spinoffs and CD have become an integral part of the presentation.

Thirty Years in Thirty Days

The Advisory Council commends Thirty Years in Thirty Days. It was interesting, good radio that recognised its roots.

Classic 100 Piano Pieces

The Advisory Council commends the Classic 100 Piano Pieces. This is an entertaining and good idea with excellent human touches and good commercial applications.
