Recommendations
Australian Writers
Recommendation R1/1/04 - Director of Development, Director of New Media and Director of Enterprises
Council noted the response to previous recommendations regarding Australian writers and expressed the view that there is still an opportunity to present the "word as written from the page". Perhaps if this is not possible on television this could be examined further by Online or DVD production.
The Advisory Council recommends that ABC Enterprises develop a DVD that consists of readings from Australian novels and poems, accompanied by complimentary music/imagery. Not interviews with the authors or critical analysis of their work just five minute readings. Suggested texts: Tim Winton's Cloudstreet, Sally Morgan's My Place, Les Murray poetry selections and so on. Many people would love their five-minute fiction break. A DVD might accommodate fifteen such readings.
ABC Information Window"
Recommendation R2/1/04 - Director of New Media
The Advisory Council suggests New Media explore the possibilities and applications offered by the deployment of flash (Macromedia Flash) based on information "windows" for users to access online information on the ABC when connected to the Internet.
The format might involve a small "window" that resides on the users desktop and can be used to deliver information that can be repeated every hour or so.
The user may choose to receive reminders through the window of upcoming radio, television or online features and programs.
The Weather Company offers a similar form of product that allows users to have updateable information on weather for a particular location of their choosing. (Reference website: www.weather/com/services/desktop.html?refer=homewxanywhere&from=homewexanywhere)

Given the complaints Council members have received about repetitive promotions particularly in television prime time it is recommended that the percentage policy for self and cross promotion on ABC Radio and Television relate to the time frames used to promote general program and product information. This will enhance cross promotion and also provide more interest and variety to promotion material.
