Recommendations and Commendations 5 - 6 July 2004

Recommendations

Julie Copeland - Arts Talk

Recommendation R1/2/04 - Director of Radio
The ABC Advisory Council commends Julie Copeland for her Arts Talk program. Many segments of the program are most interesting and could perhaps be aired at other times for those people not able to listen to the Sunday program.

Commendations

The Advisory Council made the following commendations:

Moments in Time

The Advisory Council commends Moments in Time, presenting unique insights into people and their everyday jobs in an entertaining way whether they are jockeys or tea ladies. The Council also commends their use as short fillers between programs.

Strictly Dancing

The Advisory Council commends Strictly Dancing; it is innovative and takes a new look at dancing on television. The Council also commends the dropping of the entry age for the second series and Paul McDermott for his presentation.

The New Inventors

The Advisory Council commends The New Inventors, as it is motivational for people who are innovative and creative, revising an old idea in a modern format. The mix of panel judges, clever use of ABC archival footage appeals to a broad range of age groups.

Gardening Australia

The Advisory Council commends Gardening Australia for its consistently high quality. It is a program about gardening without gimmicks.

ABCxchange/Inside the ABC

The Advisory Council commends Virginia Sargent the Editor of 'abcXchange' and 'Inside the ABC' for the consistent high quality of these publications.

AM - Tony Eastley

The Advisory Council commends Tony Eastley for his presentation of AM, particularly the broadcasts from Broken Hill, which provided important commentary on issues such as healthcare, and water and were a welcome change from focussing on politics. Perhaps more regional stories such as this could be broadcast on AM.

Angels in America

The Advisory Council commends Angels in America for the thought provoking drama which managed to convey difficult subjects most imaginatively and with great impact. Council feels that the series would have benefited from an introduction putting it into a contextual situation and to assist viewers in enjoying the series.

Checklist for an Armed Robber

Council commends Checklist for an Armed Robber for the innovative use of cross platforms between radio and online and for the excellent graphic design.

Educational Programming

Council commends the ABC for the educational programming from 10am to midday, this refreshed and updated material is highly appreciated by students and teachers.

The Glasshouse

The Advisory Council congratulates The Glasshouse on its 100th program and commends this funny, innovative and popular program.

Reality Bites

The Advisory Council commends the Reality Bites series in particular Selling Success and Moulin Rouge Girls, both programs took viewers through a thematic journey. This series is increasingly firming up its place in the schedule and in the top twenty programs.

Best of Mother and Son

The Advisory Council commends the showing of Best of Mother and Son. This series has not dated and Council would like to think that the ABC can bring back high quality timeless classic Australian programs from time to time.

Awaye

The Advisory Council again commends Awaye for its contribution to a discussion of Indigenous issues. In particular the Council would like to commend the new reporter in Perth, Michelle White.
