Recommendation R1/2/02 - Director of Radio
The imminent closure of WA Curtin radio station has come to the attention of the ABC Advisory Council. The Council recommends that ABC Radio in WA examine the opportunity the possible fall out from this closure may provide with the need to cater to an older demographic.
Program guide online
Recommendation R2/2/02 - Director of New Media and Digital Services
The ABC Advisory Council appreciates the Online program guide. Unfortunately quite regularly information is either not there or up to date. The Advisory Council understands the infrastructure problems with this and suggests that perhaps until these are sorted out and a regular up to date guide can be generated it may better not to have a guide at all.
Youth logo
Recommendation R3/2/02 - Director of New Media and Digital Services
The ABC Advisory Council commends Fly as an important initiative for young people to access a broad range of programming on the ABC the Council would like to see it extended and highlighted and made more obvious.
Council suggests a dedicated Youth logo, which would allow people to click into programs, which might interest a younger audience; this would also be helpful for teachers who could link into the site.
Youth logo competition
Recommendation R4/2/02 - Director of New Media and Digital Services
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that the ABC consider launching a competition to design a youth logo.
Youth program - regions
Recommendation R5/2/02 - Director of Television
The Advisory Council recommends that the ABC investigate the concept of an occasional television program involving young people along the lines of Australia Talks to be produced in regional areas.
Foreign Correspondent
Recommendation R6/2/02 - Director of Television
Foreign Correspondent demonstrates the high quality of the ABC's overseas correspondents. The magazine format is well done and generally of high quality. Sometimes the program falls between a generalist and specialist program, with that in mind the program could be aimed at one target audience. The ABC Advisory Council recommends that there is a need for a program that has a greater analysis and in depth coverage of issues from a wider perspective with a focus on international affairs. While wanting to capitalise on the ABC's overseas correspondents such a program might also like to give a world-wide view and include reports from correspondents in areas other than those where the ABC has people posted.
Foreign Correspondent - Postcards
Recommendation R7/2/02 - Director of News and Current Affairs
The ABC Advisory Council recommends the reconsideration of the use of Foreign Correspondent's "Postcards" as fillers.
Marketing
Recommendation R8/2/02 - Director of New Media and Digital Services
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that as part of its commitment to community building that ABC Online market its services to key organisations in communities (eg State Libraries as conduits to local libraries) in order to increase awareness of, and interaction with, Online services, for example community billboards and events calendars.
Corporate watch program
Recommendation R9/2/02 - Director of Television
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that the ABC investigate the possibility of producing a program along the lines of Media Watch, which looks at Corporate Australia.
Australia all over
Recommendation R10/2/02 - Director of Radio
The ABC Advisory Council has feedback from people who feel that Australia All Over is becoming a little condescending and self-indulgent. Council would like to see the program reviewed and a return to its original focus.
Gardening Australia
Recommendation R11/2/02 - Director of Television
The ABC Advisory Council supports the concept of Gardening Australia and recognises its popularity. Council has had feedback that at times the program is becoming more like a commercial life-style program and would like to see a return to its old format.
Local radio news - weekends
Recommendation R12/2/02 - Director of Radio
While recognising the resources issues involved the ABC Advisory Council recommends that ABC Radio News look to the re-introduction of local news bulletins on Saturdays and weekends.
Local radio evening quiz
Recommendation R13/2/02 - Director of Radio
In general the evening quiz on local radio is of high quality and reflects a diversity and depth of knowledge. The ABC Advisory Council would like to see this standard promoted as the benchmark for other quizzes on local radio.
Local music
Recommendation R14/2/02 - Director of Radio
The ABC Advisory Council recommends that ABC local radio consider broadcasting more local artists.
Older demographic
Recommendation R15/2/02 - Director of Radio
To address concerns that the music tastes for the older demographic are not being catered for the ABC Advisory Council recommends that Local Radio give consideration to broadening the range of music.
The loading zone - 774 Melbourne
Recommendation R16/2/02 - Director of Radio
The ABC Advisory Council recommends a review of The Loading Zone program particularly as it appears that those interviewed often don't appear to be aware of the supposedly satirical nature of the program.
Commendations
Alan Kohler business reporting
The ABC Advisory Council commends Alan Kohler for his accessible presentation. Council has had positive feedback on the manner in which he places business and economic information in an every day context.
Radio National sports
The ABC Advisory Council commends Radio National Sports presenters Warwick Hatfield and Amanda Smith.
Last Gallipoli veteran
The ABC Advisory Council commends the coverage of the death Alec Campbell, the last Gallipoli veteran.
70th Birthday broadcast
The ABC Advisory Council commends the national broadcast of the ABC 70th Birthday celebration which brought together presenters from across Australia.
Kath and Kim
The ABC Advisory Council notes the popularity of Kath and Kim. The light hearted nature and social comment of the comedy has prompted interesting discussion. Council considers it is well placed in the schedule and would like to see more programs of this calibre with broad demographic appeal.
Jim Maxwell - South African test coverage
The ABC Advisory Council commends Jim Maxwell for his commentary on the South African Cricket Test, which was of his usual high standard of balance, particularly in comparison with the South African commentators.

The Advisory Council commends David Marr for his presentation of Media Watch.
Secret bridesmaid's business
The ABC Advisory Council commends Secret Bridesmaid's Business; it was well received and popular. It is good to see high quality Australian content and the Council would like to see more programs like this that capitalise on Australian artistic talent.
Bi media rural appointees
The ABC Advisory Council commends the appointment of bi-media rural appointees, in particular the Advisory Council members for Queensland noted the excellent choices made. The high calibre of candidates had meant that people taking up these appointments have assimilated into the areas, adapted to extreme situations and are providing a means for more of Australia to learn about regional areas.

The ABC Advisory Council commends Order in the House; several members suggested they would like to see it in a better timeslot.

The ABC Advisory Council commends the quality of 'Delicious' magazine and in particular the cross-promotion of ABC programs.

Four corners - Alan Jones
The ABC Advisory Council commends the Four Corners program on Alan Jones. It was good to see an explanation of the way the media works. This was a good program, which dealt with the issues well. The Council encourages more investigation of how the media works. Council also commends Media Watch and Radio National's Media Report.

The ABC Advisory Council commends The Track, while recognising this is a repeat Council appreciates the high level of production revealing the social and economic fabric of Australian history across two world wars.
